Discover the secrets of the oldest modern water tank in Brno!
The new interactive commentary for the Water Tanks of Špilberk tour brings the past of some of Brno’s oldest water tanks to life. These impressive spaces of underground architecture are the legacy of water tanks whose history reaches back to the 1870 and 1900, when they began supplying Brno’s citizens with essential water for everyday life. Completely reconstructed in the years 2017–2019 (although preserving giant pipes, control chambers, and other fascinating technical elements), they provide a venue for cleverly displaying artefacts of sculptured stone. The uniqueness of the space powerfully complements the thirty plus stone exhibits on display – statues, monuments, tombstones from Brno’s liquidated cemeteries, or carved stone ornamentation from long-lost buildings.
The guided tour is moreover enhanced by interactive and audiovisual elements. To the sounds of water, before the visitors’ eyes appears a water gauge – giving a better idea of the huge volumes (exceeding 2,000,000 litres) once contained in these tanks. The interactive lighting of the stone artefacts changes according to the guide’s commentary. Thanks most of all to the projected video sequences, the visitor will develop a newfound appreciation for the history and importance of the Špilberk water tanks.
So, open the doors to the past and discover the hidden treasures of the Brno City Museum at Špilberk Castle. The Water Tanks on Špilberk are open all year round. Tickets can be bought online at BrnoiD or from the ticket office in the castle’s Small Courtyard. Entrance is permitted only when accompanied by a guide.
