Augustinians were heavily involved in charitable activities

Interest in charitable work is why a young Mendel, having finished his theology studies in 1848, was assigned to perform pastoral services for patients in St Anne’s Hospital. While at the hospital, he met Pavel Olexík, who introduced him to meteorology.

St Anne’s University Hospital Brno is now the second-largest hospital in the city. It was established in 1786, following the reforms by Joseph II, in a former Dominican monastery in Staré Brno (Old Brno). The monastery building was not very suitable for the given purpose, so it was decided to build a new hospital based on designs by the Viennese architect Theophil Hansen. Today, this institution also serves students of the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University and is the location of Mezinárodní centrum klinického výzkumu (the International Clinical Research Centre).
