Brno Christmas
The quieter expanse of Dominikánské náměstí (Dominican Square), dominated by the wooden Nativity Scene carved by Jiří Halouzek of over one hundred life-sized figures, is an especially popular spot for families with children. The kids are fascinated by the depiction of the Holy Family, and especially the adoring animals, and of course they’re also drawn to the children’s village beside St. Michael’s Church.
Both the church and the adjacent New Town Hall are beautifully illuminated, creating a chocolate-box backdrop you won’t find on other squares. Adults can reboot themselves with refreshments at 9 food and drinks stalls, offering international Christmas cuisine and festive delicacies. There are Christmas trees aplenty and musical accompaniment by local buskers.
Nativity Scene
Halouzek’s wooden Nativity Scene, comprising one hundred life-sized figures, has become synonymous with the square’s seasonal makeover below Brno’s New Town Hall. Each figure is hand carved, and the ensemble is among the largest of its type.
Buskers
As a UNESCO City of Music, Brno without live music on its streets is simply unthinkable, and for this reason Dominican Square belongs during Brno Christmas to its buskers and street artists.
