OHB: Lesná: Futurist fantasy, or the living ramparts of a fairy tale

  • Terminus stop Čertova rokle

This tower block estate is a garden city in which the buildings can sometimes be hard to see through the trees. Thanks to the Soviet invasion of 1968, this urban experiment of the 1960s remained unfinished. It comprises large tower blocks, pavilion complexes of Scandinavian-type schools, complemented with decorative walls and outdoor statues. You can find here a natural amphitheatre built to accommodate 500 people, as well as a large forest park in which you can hunt mushrooms, and watch hares or squirrels at play. In 1967, the newly emerging Lesná estate was admired by attendees at the Congress of the International Union of Architects; two years later, Lesná was the birthplace of the project that became one of the nation’s greatest architectural successes – the Czechoslovak Pavilion at Expo 1970. How has Lesná held up after 50 years? Come and find out on a guided tour of the estate.
