Gustav Brom 100: Hotel Passage, Lidická 23
In Brno, Brom’s band R-Boys began to hold regular concerts in the Passage Hotel on Lidická Street, where they got their first engagement in 1940. They were so successful that Brom got his business license as a bandleader. But the regime would have preferred strong young men to fight on the front rather than dance on stage. To keep out of the spotlight, the band moved to Zlín and later to Katovice. There, the bureaucracy caught up with them and Gustav Brom again found himself in handcuffs. Luckily, one of the band’s fans worked at the Brno labour office and found the musicians work at Zbrojovka in Brno. The regime got what it wanted, and the group stayed together and could keep performing.
