Brno Christmas – náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square)

Come to náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square) to check out our Christmas tree, standing in the exact same spot as the very first city Christmas tree in Czech lands was place almost a century ago!

Freedom Square is a natural centre of the city, and that’s especially true during Advent and Christmas. Even though the markets have been cancelled by the government, Christmas is still in the air, inviting you to take a holiday stroll. Just hop on a special Christmas tram and take a tour of the city!

This square is where the very first Christmas tree in the Czech lands was placed, brought to Brno from the nearby village of Bílovice nad Svitavou by a team of horses. Under the tree, you’ll find the traditional charity collection by the Czech Red Cross; your donations will pay for rehabilitation stays of kids from the SOS Children’s Villages and seniors, as well as help socially disadvantaged people and families.

There are a few stalls at the Freedom Square selling Christmas decorations, but the rest have unfortunately had to close.
