Opening weekend – opening ceremony of the RE:PUBLIKA Festival

Exactly 90 years after President Masaryk ceremoniously opened the Brno Exhibition Centre, it will host the start of the largest celebration in our country of the founding of an independent Czechoslovakia. There will be a grand musical surprise, 300 celebratory banners, period cars, costumes, excellent food, a one-of-a-kind light show. The celebration starts at 12. Maybe even Masaryk will show up…

The event belongs to the RE:PUBLIKA Festival.

FULL PROGRAMME OF THE OPENING WEEKEND

Saturday – 26 May 2018

9:00 a.m.

  • opening ceremony in front of the main entrance to the Brno Exhibition Centre
  • three-dimensional invitations to unique events
  • period-specific artefacts and items
  • period-specific music

10:00 a.m.

  • concert march of the Czech Army’s orchestra and the Ondráš ensemble

11:30 a.m.

  • parade of vintage cars between the Technical Museum in Brno and the main gate of the Brno Exhibition Centre
  • parade of standard-bearers of fire brigades from all over the country (approximately 200 – 300)

12:00 Grand opening ceremony:

  • speeches by notable guests and “TGM”
  • ribbon cutting and opening of the Brno Exhibition Centre
  • entry through the cordon formed by the standard bearers
  • outdoor areas: Gastro Zone, exhibition of vintage cars, old fire trucks, markets, photo corners, watchtowers, Photo Stories

12:30 p.m. Outdoor programme in front of Hall A:

  • commemorative ribbon decoration ceremony for 300 members of fire brigades
  • 1:30 p.m. Ceremonial planting of linden trees as part of the programme “Linden Trees of the Republic 1918 – 2018”

Avant Garde, Hall G1

The best of contemporary design and exceptional works from the past century – Maxim Velčovský, Lucie Koldová, Tomáš Svoboda and many more. Visit Hall G1 where the H3T studio has built “The Free City”. Curators Ondřej Chrobák, Jan Press, Jiří Macek and Jana Zielinski have prepared this exhibition in cooperation with the Moravian Gallery; it will be coordinated with special screenings and an outdoor installation by Krištof Kintera.

Re:lax Zone, Hall V

Stylish sporting facilities for more than 50 sports will be there for visitors to explore and try. These will include winter sports, a pool, a gym, rowing, courts, fields, a cycling arena, the Brno Circuit, Sokol and Orel sporting facilities etc. Hall V will also offer close encounters with legends of sport and the most memorable moments from the century of sport.

The Slav Epic, Hall H

The Slav Epic is coming to Brno for the very first time. Last year’s exhibition of Alphonse Mucha’s canvases in Tokyo was third most visited art exhibition in the world. Selected parts of this famous series will be displayed at the festival for three weeks, along with some of Mucha’s lesser-known posters.

100 let 100 knih (100 Years, 100 Books), Morava Hall

Literature is alive… and its pulsating heart can be found in the Morava Hall. The Jiří Mahen Library has selected 100 most interesting Czech books and 100 most beautiful children’s books. The programme will include author readings, workshops, theatre and musical performances. The creative part will allow you to get to know more about literature through first-hand experience, storytelling or art therapy; Edtech library will teach you more about 3D technologies.

Dance Brno 100, Hall F

Dance Brno 100 is the largest festival of dance ensembles in Central and Eastern Europe, with ballet ensembles of national theatres of Poland, Slovakia, Serbia, Austria, Slovenia, Ukraine, Croatia, Hungary and the Czech Republic (the National Theatre and the National Theatre Brno ballet ensembles). The event Brno folklorní will show you, over one weekend and on one stage, the differences among individual successor states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in terms of their folk music, dance and costumes.

The hall will also host several exhibitions:

  • Já a Sokol (Sokol and me) – an exhibition focused on the influence of the Sokol movement on the emancipation of nations.
  • Ať žije republika  (Hail to the Republic) – an exhibition of the Technical Museum in Brno introducing key milestones in the history of the country and its industry, including three-dimensional artefacts like the Tatra 17/31 car from 1930
  • Paměť národa: Tenkrát v Brně (Memory of the Nation… Now in Brno) – an exhibition of NPO Post Bellum which tells a story of ten citizens of Brno through large-format photographs.

Several panel exhibitions of photographs –  Janáček, Meeting Brno, 50 years of the Husa na provázku Theatre. The Czech Philharmonic will take you to the world of classical music, and the Faculty of Chemistry of Brno University of Technology  will prove to you that chemistry is not boring at all, and that it can taste good, too.
