Museum of Applied Arts

The Renaissance Revival Museum of Applied Arts in Brno was built in the 19th century and today houses the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the new concept ART DESIGN FASHION.

This Renaissance Revival building on the Brno ring road was built based on designs by the museum’s director, architect Johann. G. Schön, and inspired by buildings in Vienna from Gottfried Semper. It was grandly conceived as an impressive stand for collection storage, exhibitions, and lectures. The Museum of Applied Arts in Brno was founded on the model of the Viennese Museum of Art and Industry (now the Museum of Applied Arts) on 2 December 1873 and opened to the public in 1883.

Today it houses the Moravian Gallery in Brno and at the end of 2021 gained a new concept: ART DESIGN FASHION. The museum is dedicated to design and also fashion and the relationship between design and art. You’ll find a permanent exhibition, current exhibitions, and new facilities prepared exclusively for the gallery by leading Czech designers. The altered form of the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno presents an imagined display case for Czech designers and their products. This multilayer concept does not have a match in extent and quality in the Czech Republic. Liběna Rochová’s iconic models, the expanding Demon of Growth, and 13,000 glass, ceramic, and porcelain items from the museum’s repository. And much more.

The interior renovations involved mainly incorporating the idea of presenting contemporary designers through their designs for interior elements and spaces. The gallery therefore engaged Maxim Velčovský, Eva Eisler, David Karásek, the Olgoj Chorchoj studio, and Marek Štěpán in the preparations.
